Balancing Hormones for Stronger Bones
It’s estimated that 1 in 3 women over the age of 50 will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture. Osteoporosis is a medical condition where the bones become brittle and porous and is most common among post-menopausal women. There is a direct relationship between declining levels of estrogen and symptoms of osteoporosis – which is it’s so important for women to get plenty of calcium and vitamin D during menopause. Beginning in the years leading up to menopause or perimenopause, bone resorption starts to occur at a faster rate than the rebuilding of new bone, resulting in bone loss.
Medical Mondays: How to Age Gracefully
I recently started taking bioidentical hormones to help ease some of my menopause symptoms. I have more energy than I used to, my weight is more managable and my hot flashes are a thing of the past and while the hormones have helped tremendously with many of my symptoms, I still want to improve my health from a nutritional and fitness standpoint. I know that bioidenticals help with hormones, but what about everything else? What are some ways that I improve the way that my body ages?

Mel Gibson Blames Male Menopause
A letter recently surfaced, written by Mel Gibson in the weeks leading up to his infamous meltdown. In the letter written to his girlfriend at the time, Oksana Grigorieva, the actor blamed his uncontrollable anger on the male menopause. Gibson allegedly told Oksana that he was worried he was no longer in control and that he could possibly “drink or commit a crime.” In the letter, the actor appeared scared and desperate, saying “the anger seems to be out of my control – I need to do something about it, something lasting, not just a band aid.”
What Doctors Don't Know About Nutrition
I thank Dr. Pauline Chen for her article in The NY Times. It is very important to raise awareness about this issue. Even as medical technology progresses, we are becoming a much more unhealthy society, and I strongly believe that declining nutrition has a lot do with this. Yet many medical schools do not effectively teach about nutrition. Most physicians do not have adequate knowledge about nutrition and are unable to counsel their patients on the subject.
Dr. Joseph Kaye's Response to NY Times Article
As a physician practicing Integrative Holistic Internal Medicine, I spend close to 45 minutes of the 90 minutes allotted for my initial consults simply explaining optimal nutrition. I debunk fallacies such as the need to eat 5-9 servings of grain per day and that “a calorie is a calorie.” I put my patients on a Paleolithic diet that replicates the foods we evolved to eat.
Medical Mondays: Cognitive Health and Hormones
What’s the connection between Alzheimer’s Disease and our hormones? Also, I’ve heard that fish oil supplements can help prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease later on in life. How does this work and what else can I be doing on a regular basis to stay healthy?

Medical Mondays: September is Menopause Awareness Month
“The best way to relieve symptoms of menopause is to address the problem at its source. Hormone testing can help assess current hormone levels and determine what hormones are needed to restore balance and successfully mitigate symptoms. Tens of thousands of women have turned to bioidentical hormone therapy to help them overcome symptoms of hormonal imbalance and it all starts with having your hormone levels evaluated by a hormone specialist.”

Dr. Orbeck’s alliance with BodyLogicMD provides him with the opportunity to work exclusively helping women and men overcome many of the common health challenges associated with hormonal imbalance, including menopause, andropause, thyroid disorder and adrenal fatigue.
Medical Mondays: Hormones and Cholesterol
I was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroid disease – in another words I have an underactive thyroid gland. After some hormone testing, I found out that my estrogen levels were low and my doctor said that this could the reason that my cholesterol levels were so high. He told me that estrogen helps regulate cholesterol in the body, which is why many menopausal women see a spike in blood-cholesterol levels.
I commend Dr. Rashid for joining the growing number of doctors who are looking beyond traditional medicine to address the health concerns of women. Specializing in integrative medicine and bioidentical hormone therapy, I have seen firsthand how debilitating the symptoms of menopause can be for women. Traditional doctors often have very little to offer them. I know this because I used to be one until I extended my training beyond the limits of traditional medicine.
