Dr. Northrup also explains how hormone replacement therapy can relieve many of the symptoms of menopause and perimenopause such as hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, depression and diminished libido.

According to Dr. Northrup, symptoms of hormonal imbalance such as hot flashes and night sweats are magnified by stress. Stress increases our natural production of cortisol; the “stress hormone.” When large amounts of cortisol are released into our bloodstream, we begin to experience other symptoms related to hormonal imbalance such as fatigue and weight gain. Although hormonal imbalance may wreak havoc on our bodies on the outside, the destruction it can cause on the inside poses a much greater threat to our health.
