Somers' Knockout: Balanced Hormones Are Foundation For Cancer Prevention

October 13, 2009

web_174_displaySuzanne Somers’ Knockout, explores the holistic and natural alternatives to cancer treatment and prevention. In her book, Somers discusses the value of fitness and nutrition, the impact they have on our overall health and how making the right lifestyle decisions can greatly reduce our risk of developing cancer.

Did you know that we develop cancer an average of eight times in our lifetime? Those of us with good immune systems can fight off the early stages of cancer, before it has a chance to spread. Inflammation makes it harder for the body to fight off these early stages of cancer because it is too busy dealing with the inflammatory response to infection, irritation or injury. On the short term, this natural immune response can be lifesaving, but scientists have confirmed that severe inflammation is the common denominator to many diseases such as cancer. When it comes to inflammation, there are many underlying causes, but the most important thing one could do to significantly reduce their risk of developing cancer and other inflammatory-related diseases would be to limit their exposure to cortisol; the stress hormone.

Cortisol production increases in response to stress. The interesting thing about stress is that it might not just be due to emotional stress; it could be stress form illness or surgery, stress from food allergies or food additives, stress from pesticides or any number of environmental factors. However, no matter what the cause may be, we respond to stressors in the same way – by raising cortisol levels. This serves as a “fight or flight” response to stress on the short term. However, chronic elevations in cortisol can lead to abnormities in the immune system that might make it harder for the body to fight off cancers that might be in the early stages.

High levels of cortisol also cause hormonal fluctuations that often lead to a shift in our bodies to a more pro-inflammatory state.  When your body is forced to continually produce cortisol, your adrenal glands become chronically overworked, and in turn, they lower their output of DHEA.  DHEA is necessary to maintain balance of the hormones in your body, and when it is low, you feel the effects by experiencing overwhelming fatigue, aching joints, low libido, depression, midday fatigue and an increased susceptibility to infections among other symptoms.

Having balanced hormone levels is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle to ensure optimal health and wellness.  Bioidentical hormones help balance the delicate interplay of hormones in the body, and have helped many men and women just like you regain their energy and vitality.
