First Suzanne Somers, Next Oprah Winfrey
By Dr. Alicia Stanton, BLMD Physician and CMO
As Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of BodyLogicMD, a national network of anti-aging physicians specializing in bioidentical hormone therapy integrated with nutrition and fitness, I have proud moments to share and high aspirations to accomplish.
It’s exciting to write my first blog and I’m looking forward to creating dialogue opportunities regarding health issues important to so many of us. I have been the BodyLogicMD CMO since March 2007 and a doctor within the BodyLogicMD family for two years. The position affords me the opportunity to work with brilliant and caring anti-aging physicians, many of whom are in our network of BodyLogicMD doctors. I attend numerous scientific meetings to gain the most up to date information to share with our physicians.
Having my own BodyLogicMD practice is a great source of joy for me. The patients – suffering from the symptoms of menopause, signs of andropause, adrenal fatigue or related hormonal imbalances – are well educated, inquisitive and so very motivated to optimize their health. Often times they come to me after numerous visits to traditional doctors without the answers they need, confused and very frustrated. My patients are easy to work with because they want more education and are willing to listen to their own needs as well as my recommendations. We work together as a team; enhancing the experience and the results.
Dinner with Suzanne Somers
One of the really cool things I experienced because of my affiliation with BodyLogicMD was to meet Suzanne Somers, celebrity author, entrepreneur and bioidentical hormone therapy advocate – and have dinner at her home in Palm Springs, California.
BodyLogicMD’s Chief Medical Officer is featured as an expert physician in Somers’ newest book, “Ageless” and when she hosted a dinner party for the physicians affiliated with her book and I was honored to be on the guest list. Suzanne is a truly beautiful woman in so many ways. I applaud her exuberance in attempting to let the general public know that there are many ways to handle health issues and that we don’t have to define health only as lack of disease. Her home is beautiful and she gave us a tour and explained that she decorated it by herself with many of the things she collected as she traveled around the world. Her most prized possessions were some framed drawings done by her grandchildren as a gift for her 60th birthday. I truly enjoyed the experience and appreciate all of her efforts and contributions to help bring bioidentical hormone therapy to the public.
I have been practicing nutrition and hormone balance for seven years. The first five were as part of my private OB/GYN practice, which closed in July 2005 so that I could devote all of my time to a more natural and preventive practice of medicine.
My journey is just beginning
It is an amazing experience. My patients appreciate the fact that I am able to see things from a different viewpoint than most of the traditional physicians. My goal is to let as many patients and physicians know the many ways to enhance your health and there is room in the medical field for new modalities of treatment. I spent many extra years attending courses and reading to enhance my knowledge. The strangest thing is most of the time I relearn the stuff from early medical school – the basic biochemistry and physiology. This basis allows me to get to the very root of my patients’ problems and take a more natural approach. I reach out to groups of interested people with seminars and public educational opportunities. I train physicians by teaching at the Institute of Functional Medicine, the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and the New York Chiropractic College.
Oprah – Here I Come…
Last (but not least), I am currently working on a book for the public to discuss the importance of diet and nutrition in hormone balance. I hope to one day be sharing my thoughts and expertise as an expert source on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The topic of bioidentical hormone therapy would make a good topic and I promise not to jump on the couch like Tom Cruise.

How do I know that testosterone cream is safe and won’t give me breast or ovarian cancer?
I wish Oprah would do a show on this issue. I was fired when I requested a transfer in my prosecutorial job due to disabling symptoms of menopause. No one knows how profoundly this condition can impact functionality. It’s not just hot flashes, although those are awful, it’s depression and chronic insomnia, and for me, an inability to concentrate that made me unable to finish tasks required of me. Suzanne Sommers opened my eyes, but not those of my (mostly male) bosses.
I am hoping to get an appointment at your Chicago office. Is there anything that I should be doing to maximize this visit time prior to getting the appointment. For example…diary of eating or sleeping habits? Stop taking certain vitamins or supplements such as Estroven? Will certain things affect or alter my hormone tests?
I have tacken the salavia test and had the blood woek done. I am now wairntin for my office visit. For the first time I feel there is hope after reading all about biodenticals and Hormone imbalance. Between the brain fog, hot flashes, chronic insomnia, and horrific joint pain, I have pretty much feel like a black cloud of doom has been hanging over my head. I hope everything I am reading is factual and actually works. Being in this painful, state is just unbearable.
I have only recently begun using compounded bio identical hormone therapy. I feel such a sense of excitement for the future. My menopausal symptoms are horrific and causing increased weight gain, anxiety, arthritis pain, sleeplessness and depression… If I mentioned all of the symptoms I have, I would sound like a drama queen, or worse, a hypochondriac.
I hope that the word on bioidenticals will make it’s way into the public by several avenues other than talk shows.
Please be sure to stress that not all bioidenticals are the same. I met with a doctor who said she prescribed bioidenticals only to find out that she wanted to prescribe estrogen cream (synthetics) made from horse urine. Since then, I have learned to say “compounded natural bioidenticals”.
I am 55 and still gaining weight! I exercis, eat right and I have read the Swharzbien Principal and Sommers book and thought that is what I need. I eliminated stress, (slept alot the first 2 months) gave up anything white, artificial, bread, caffein (realy tough) etc and found BioIdentical Dr. that I love, I was excited and for 6 months I am on oral progesteron , cream estrogen and thyroid pill. BUT I AM Still gaining weight(ugly cottage cheese like), I gained around the middle and thighs most. Still waking in the middle of the night and now I ache in every joint plus it is expensive with no results, Now what?
My introduction to menopause consisted of heavy dysfunctional bleeding.
I fired my first doctor who simply gave me birth control and sent me on my way ignoring the fact that I was already anemic.
I slipped down to being a 7.5 anemic.
My second doctor gave me a depo shot and norethin ace 5 mg to stop the bleeding and prescribed iron supplements twice daily. I have stopped bleeding these past three weeks and the additional calcium and 18mg of iron I’ve been taking twice daily has my blood levels back to a 10.1.
I’m scheduled for another Depo in January. But, I want bioidenticals.
When do I push for them? Can I reschedule for earlier without being a nudge? What is your opinion. My doctor says bioidenticals are a possibility but, get out of the dangerous anemia zone first. I basically understand that.
I’m not comfortable with synthetics. I’m still tired but recovering. I’m gaining weight and am sometimes impossible to deal with even for myself. My body keeps screaming for all solutions now. I’m heavy and dumpy and slow. I was actually once a beautiful woman.
I think I could be a great fan of bioidenticals. I’m anxious to start. How patient a patient need I be?
Can you tell me where in Pittsburgh PA I can get this treatment? I understand there is a center in Moon Township, PA near my home. I heard Suzanne’s radio commercial with an 877 number but could not write it down. Thanks
very interesting, but I don’t agree with you

Amazing for so long I have been talking to my Dr’s about how I feel and I get a pat on the hand and told it’s a part of life. My employer thinks I need anger management. And all along I know it is my hormones. I have taken all the neccessary steps, now I am making the Dr appointment , I pray that this is the answer I am looking for.
I am thankful to God & my family Dr. for telling me about bioidentical hormone therapy!!! I just pray that this works, because this is my last hope. I’m 37yrs old & all the HRT pill, creams, patches only left me with an extra 50lbs. to lose.

Does anyone know of a great hormone therapy doctor in the Fresno or Bakersfield California area? I’m almost sixty still getting hot flashes and all around health (even with good nutrition) sucks…Thanks!
Marcia,
While our closest BodyLogicMD physician is about two hours from you in Encino, be aware that after the initial consult, follow-up appointments can be done over the phone. Lab work is done in the comfort of your home and in your nearest Quest Lab location. We hope you find a good doctor and help soon.
Wishing you good health,
BodyLogicMD
I am truly looking forward to my initial appt. with Dr. Grossman. Labs are done! I just want to know how long of a wait it is getting my the hormones. Is is weeks, I hope not!
Brenda,
Congratulations on your upcoming appointment! Dr. Grossman is a great physician and very personable. The length of time to get your first hormones depends on your individual needs but usually takes a week or so. Supplements are usually the first to arrive, then pills or capsules, then creams – going by the level of difficulty and time to create them. Once your orders is faxed over, try calling the pharmacy – they’ll be able to give you a more legitamate time frame. We know you’ll be feeling better soon! Keep us updated!
