Menopause vs. Andropause: Understanding the difference

September 12, 2009

andropauseMayoClinic.com released an article debunking the myths of “Male Menopause.” The correct term for what has been coined by some as  “Male Menopause” is andropause and can be described as “age-related hormone changes in men.” During menopause, women experience a plunge in hormone production in a relatively short period of time after ovulation ends. Whereas during andropause, men experience a gradual decline in hormonal production as they age.

The article explains that “Testosterone levels gradually decline throughout adulthood — about 1 percent a year after age 30 on average. By about age 70, the decrease in a man’s testosterone level can be as much as 50 percent.” It is possible, however, that low levels of testosterone are being caused by various medical conditions such as sleep apnea, rather than just aging. It is important to receive a medical examination if experiencing effects of low testosterone to identify the true cause.

Some of the symptoms of low testosterone include:

 Changes in sexual function

  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Physical changes such as: increased body fat, lower muscle strength or bulk, hair loss, hot flashes, or decreased energy
  • Emotional changes, which may include: a decrease in motivation or self confidence, feelings of depression, and loss of memory

If you are familiar with some of these symptoms, testing is simple and easy!  Get your hormones balanced – take back control of your life!
