Another Bioidentical Hormone Breakthrough- Suzanne Somers Releases “Breakthrough: Eight Steps To Wellness”

September 11, 2008

By Dr. Alicia Stanton, Patrick Savage (President BodyLogicMD), and Lisa Buyer

Two years ago the three of us arrived at Suzanne Somers home in Palm Springs, California for an intimate dinner party, celebrating the release of her book, “Ageless, The Naked Truth About Bioidentical Hormones.” She graciously invited the physicians and anti-aging experts who contributed their expertise to her book. We had no doubt it would become a New York Times bestseller, and it did, just like her previous book, “The Sexy Years.”

When Suzanne Somers talks about bioidentical hormones, people listen.

No wonder morning talk shows like “The Today Show” want her to discuss her new book, “Breakthrough: Eight Steps To Wellness.”  Suzanne Somers announced the release of her newest book discussing her success with bioidentical hormones. This latest book lays out a path to anti-aging wellness and again, BodyLogicMD is listed as a resource for men and women looking for credible and trustworthy anti-aging physicians.

At BodyLogicMD, we applaud Suzanne Somers for helping create awareness about the enlightening and lifesaving information. She shares the eight steps to wellness and we hope it helps educate the general public, media and medical community about cutting-edge, proven remedies and preventative healthcare that most doctors are not talking about.

In “Breakthrough: Eight Steps to Wellness,” Somers and twenty anti-aging physicians describe how processed chemicals in foods and mainstream pharmaceuticals are slowly

eroding our bodies and minds. Somers not only describes her personal wellness regime, but also lays out eight steps to help readers live a longer and healthier life.
Some of the eight steps described:

  • Balance hormones through bioidentical hormone replacement (not synthetic, cancer causing)
  • Avoid chemicals and detoxify your body
  • Take nutrition seriously
    Care for your GI tract
    Sleeping
  • Thyroid problems
  • Restore hearing

We recommend this book and look forward to its destiny to be another New York Times bestseller.

I have a cousin, age 30, that has been struggling with Hodgkins disease, lymophoma for nearly 5 years. She has gone through the chemo, the radiation and bone marrow transplants. She has gone through a cancer free stage and now unfortunately it’s back. She is tired. She doesn’t want the traditional medicine anymore, and I am almost fearing she is giving up. I have often thought about bioidentical hormone therapy but didn’t want to press my unknowledgeable knowledge on her. I think it might work for her because of all the treatments she has been given has thrown her body out of whack. Do you have any information for me that I can pass on to her? She is in Sarasota Fla. Thanks very much.

  11. Michele says:

I am 6 months post-op from a Hysterectomy ans I have had so many things going on since the surgery. I am on bio-identical therapy. I really have n’t have success with ridding the hot flashes or the night sweats. I’ve been on the therapy since August.

  12. Tanya Phan says:

I’m going through menopause right now and I feel really tired, loss of sleep, no energy, anxiety and everything you name it. I feel so depressed. If you know anything natural I can take to help me with this. I don’t want to take HRT cause I heard alot of side effects. Please help!!!

  13. bodylogicmd says:

    Tanya,
Synthetic hormones are derived from plant progesterone and animal estrogens, but are not identical to the hormones your body uses. These synthetic hormones act as toxins because their chemical makeup cannot be metabolized properly. This is why there are so many side effects.
BodyLogicMD only uses natural bioidentical hormones. Unlike synthetic hormones, bioidentical hormones are replicas of the body’s own natural hormones. Bioidentical hormones are made from soy, yams and other plant extracts, which are changed in a lab to be biologically identical to the same hormones your body makes.
BodyLogicMD natural hormone replacement is customized to fit exactly what your body needs, which is easily determined by a few saliva tests. You are given only what your body needs, nothing more and nothing less. If you are interested in learning more about bioidentical hormone therapy visit our website or attend one of our free seminars where you can get the answers you need and you can meet a local physician.
We hope you find relief soon! Thank you for your question!

“Hair Revive” is a great product for hair loss. My hairstylist noticed new growth immediately. Also, my local health food store tells me it blows off the shelf – thats how I found out about it.

  15. Elaine says:

Hormone therapy is not for everyone and it needs to be carefully monitored by a physician. They are not to be taken like candy. Besides, they must be prescribed! as all women have different needs in this department. Each of us has special needs and what’s good for her may not be right for another.

  16. Maryanne says:

I have been on bio-idential hormones since February 2008 and I have to share with all of you it really does work if you follow the program exactly as your doctor prescribes. I suffered severly from all the typical menapause symptoms and refused to go the traditional route. I have never in my life felt so wonderful! Thank you BodyLogicMD.com and Dr. Berman.

  17. Lilian says:

Is there an audiotape on this book?

  18. Beverly says:

My sister had the pellets put in November 15th, about a week ago she got a period. She is 59, toltally depressed with anxiety and freaked when this happened. When you have this procedure, will you always get a period each month if one continues the procedure even at age 59 +? I feel responsible because I was the one to suggest this procedure when nothing either medical or natural was helping her. I could see a young person getting a period, but I certainly would not want to get my period again at age 62. She says she is not going to continue this procedure.

    • bodylogicmd says:

      Beverly,
I totally understand your frustration and concern. The simple answer is No you are not supposed to get a period and that was not the intention of the treating physician.

The great thing about pellet therapy is that it is so convenient being every 4 months and the absorption of the hormones are very consistent with steady levels. Unfortunately, every once in a while despite starting someone on a low dose there can be some bleeding. Your sister was probably very sensitive to estrogen and it sounds like she will need a much lower dose. Also since testosterone converts over to estrogen as well, it will probably also need to be lowered next dose.

I hope your sister does not get discouraged!! On the next round, this should not happen again. She will have to make sure she is also on progesterone via a daily pill or cream. The good news about working with a BodyLogicMD physician is that we are able to offer various different ways to deliver the hormones and she might want to choose an alternative way next time. This also brings up a good point on how important it is to have close follow up and repeat blood or saliva testing to check your hormone levels after you begin treatment. Everybody will metabolize the hormones at a different rate and therefore have different levels after beginning treatment.

      Hope this helps. Take care

    Hello,
I have a question about mt period I turned 47 Jan 5, 2009 I have started my period and it seems to be going on I started Dec 31, spotting and now have a full blown for two weeks is this the begining of my new life I hope not. I am looking for something to make it stop I have no other signs that I can think of I am usually on time on 4-5 days max HELP PLEASE ANY INFO U CAN GIVE

    • bodylogicmd says:

      Hello Cindy,

This is very common in your age group. This is usually caused by anovulatory menstrual cycles, meaning that you may have periods now without ovulating. As a result your progesterone level may be declining, which leads to irregular menstrual cycles. The first thing to do is to discuss this with your gynecologist. He or she will probably want to do an endometrial biopsy to rule out endometrial cancer and ultrasound studies to look at the lining of your womb. A very good way to see if lack of progesterone is the issue is to do a full saliva panel to test for all of the hormones as well as blood testing to measure your thyroid hormone. You can meet with a hormone specialist to discuss and come up with a plan.

      Take care,

BodyLogicMD is always in the process of expanding to new locations. Due to our high standards and training requirements, finding a qualified physician can take some time; we will only work with the best physicians. We will always announce on our blogs and our site every time we open a new location. Insurance Question as answered by one of our patients:

“A lot of you have been asking about insurance issues lately, so I went straight to the source at BodyLogicMD and got some answers for you. The main questions you’ve asked are why doesn’t BodyLogicMD bill our bioidentical hormone therapy treatments directly to insurance and what are the overall costs involved in treating menopause and andropause.

So here’s the gist, in the simplest way possible.

Most of us have insurance, and most of us have a co-pay with that insurance. In addition to that co-pay, we all have deductibles. When it comes to lab work your deductible most likely applies, meaning you pay the full price until your deductible is met. If you see the doctor as well, your usual co-pay applies also.

Secondly, a lot of the time lab work isn’t covered at all because it’s outside of your “standard lab allowance” – or what-the-hell-ever! We find out, after we’ve had these labs taken, of course, that they aren’t covered and we pay out of pocket.

Additionally, the lab charges your insurance company an inflated price, which can be three times what they would charge if you didn’t file with insurance – so it’s rip off going through them in the first place!

What BodyLogicMD has done is negotiate a cash price for the same labs that your primary hospital or doctor use. Basically, the female hormone test panel that BodyLogicMD uses would cost $2,000 at your regular doctor. At a 20 percent co-pay (that’s assuming you paid your deductible already) that’s $400.00 – that’s if your insurance company decides to cover the test! If you haven’t paid your lab deductible for the year, you could potentially pay the full $2,000. Scary.

Too often insurance companies pull some archaic rule out of some big book and decide to apply it to you randomly – leaving you frustrated AND with a big bill for the “uncovered test.”

In my mind, hormone therapy at BodyLogicMD is worth it.

So, while it might seem intimidating to bypass insurance for these tests, financially speaking, BodyLogicMD’s prices are a much better value without any of the “unknowns” that your insurance provider is famous for.”

At BodyLogicMD, we are not insurance based, however, we will provide you with an invoice that you can submit directly to your provider. It’s possible some tests may be covered, but that will be determined between you and your insurance company, not BodyLogicMD.

I hope this answered your question.

I do not have health insurance at this time. I have 3 of Suzanne Somers’ books and she says that she negotiated the costs of hormone testing and has a weblink on her site. I have not been able to find that link. What are the costs as I will need to pay by cash. My age is 59 and my husband is 60. What do you suggest?

        • Bioidentical Hormones Expert says:

          Darla,

Typically, insurance does not cover labs or treatment – services such as these are often cash-based. I would recommend contacting a physician in your area to inquire about pricing and to see if he/she can work something out. If you don’t currenly know of a doctor in your area who practices this type of medicine, you can click on the link below and get a complete list of doctors practicing BHRT across the U.S.

I’m glad I subscribed and got this copy sent to my email. Yes, it does make perfect sense to me esp. since I Used to work fo r an Insurance (auto provider) and understand how they work..its crazy! My latest/last experience with my Surgery hasn’t been a pleasant one, meaning I got “pushed” to the side from this particular Doctors Group and can NOT get the follow -up “AfterCare” treatment plan I was Promised after the Big Chunk of Funds was Paid to them. As un-believable/un-ethical as that sounds it’s Simply the truth.!! Which btw isn’t helping my weight/sleep apnea conditions much at all. The reason “Why” I had the Surgery to begin with. My Hope is to continue with my Medical Needs and get my issues to a better and much more livable state, because I now have all the 7 Dwarf symptoms of Peri/menopause. Sleepy, Grouchy, bitchy, etc!
I eat fruit/veggies/ take vitamins/ but ALOT is Missing alot and Now I feel so elated this will be happening for me sooner than later.
Even though I haven’t been to your BodyLogic Facility yet I Applaud you in Advance on Your “Now-Needs” of so many un-healthy People both Women as well as Men. This is a truly “Bright-Star” in The Medical Field as well as an Over-all Human Right! Thank-You and Please Keep Me posted on “NEW” Opening of clinics .. as I will convey my findings here with friends/co-workers and esp. my daughter (now in her 30′s) Bless You. Tracyann

  22. I have went through surgery for breast cancer and then 33 radiations. I am reading Suzanne Somers Breakthrough. What are the thoughts about Tamoxifen for five years?? I don’t like the side effects and I would like to know what is thought about this piece of cancer threatment!!

    • bodylogicmd says:

Our treatment programs are centered around hormone therapy, not cancer. We suggest you do your research, get several opinions from breast cancer doctors and go from there. Good Luck.

    Suzanne,
I have an 82 year old aunt that is suffering miserably with itching all over. She can’t sleep and is under a great deal of stress. I saw you on Oprah and I thought I heard you say something
about a treatment that I thought she may be interested in trying. Can you help me find something that may help her?

  25. susan says:

I went to a Dr that is into bio-identical HRT and after the blood work, she prescribed a sub-lingual HRT… It tastes awful, takes about 20-25 minutes to dissolve and has sharp corners…
I don’t like it at all…it has been 30 days, and I haven’t found much difference…The Dr did NOT want to prescribe the creme, but I finally persuaded her to…now, what she prescribed has the estrogen, progesterone and testosterone all mixed together. I KNOW on the Suzanne Somers program that she applied the estrogen and progesterone separately on different arms, and talked about experimenting with the amounts until you hit the “sweet spot”, I took to mean just the right amount of each. Do I need to find a different Dr? What do y’all think?

  26. Laura Hjellen says:

At age 50, I took the bio-identical hormones from a compounding pharmacy and felt fine for about 15 years. As the years have gone by, I somehow stopped them (can’t even remember the reason……doesn’t that sound insane?) Maybe it was a divorce, change of address or whatever.
A year ago I went back to the same clinic and had all the tests done again and came away with prescriptions for the bio-identical hormones.
(There has been at least a 10 year period where I was not taking the bio’s.)

Unfortunately, after listening to several other women who 1. thought Suzanne Sommer’s breast cancer was caused by the bio’s and 2. that any excess estrogen at my age (now 73) would be a stupid thing to do., I didn’t continue them last spring.
I am wondering if I should refill the prescriptions and get on with it?
I do take progesterone and use the testosterone I got from the clinic but I have avoided the estrogen?
ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE–ANYONE ELSE IN THIS SITUATION?
    Laura

  27. Susan says:

    Suzanne,
I read all your books and made my decision to go bio. This was a big deal for me because I have always been anti-everything, all about organics. I had the last four of my six children at home, you know the type! You can only imagine how upset I am to have been taking the bio-identical hormones for the past five
months, and because things were not right I began to ask the pharmacy detailed questions, beyond the information in your publications. I’ve been gaining weight, my vision became worse and I was having a very different pain in my head I had not felt before, and I tremble sometimes just after taking them. The Villiage pharmacy, where I get my hormones (compounded) load the hormones up with saccharine! For five months now every single day I have unknowingly been putting these toxins in my body trusting in bio-identical believing it’s save and natural. I found out other pharmacy’s are putting ‘aspartame’ in them. Maybe you were unaware of this when you wrote these books, but I would warn women of this because we all know how dangerous these chemicals are especially in a hormone! What a bunch of jerks. No wonder women are gaining weight on bio’s.
