Sad womanBreast lumpiness is a natural part of a women’s body. However, there are some women who suffer from fibrocystic breast condition, a condition where the breasts are more textured and women experience breast pain, tenderness, and discomfort. Cysts occur in the breast during the menstrual cycle in which the milk-producing glands enlarge. Sometimes the cyst moves around the breast because they are not connected to the underlying breast tissues. There are also some that are accompanied by thick tissue nearby and therefore are not as mobile.

All of the hormones in the body contribute to fibrocystic breast condition. The most predominate one, however, is estrogen, especially when there is a higher ratio between it and progesterone. Similar to the menstrual cycle, each month the hormones in the breast promote the growth of tissues in its glands and increase blood vessel activity and cell metabolism. However, there is no way of getting rid of the extra growth so our breasts go through a process called apoptosis. Apoptosis is the natural process of cell death and disposal in which enzymes are stimulated to break down the cells into fragments. Sometimes the fragments lead to scarring of the ducts and release hormone-like substances that act on the glandular, ductal, and structural support cells.

There are many ways to relieve the pain of fibrocystic breast condition. Some women undergo needle biopsies to drain the liquid in the cysts. Others take molecular iodine which reduces the breasts’ sensitivity to estrogen. A change of diet can reduce some of the symptoms of the condition, such as eating high fiber foods, eliminating caffeine and chocolate, and moderating your intake of white sugar and flour. Giving your breasts massage therapy and leading an active lifestyle can also help. It is important to perform self-breast exams regularly in order to tell if something abnormal appears.

By balancing your hormones with natural bioidentical hormone therapy, you may be able to get your estrogen levels under control and relieve  some of the symptoms associated with fibrocystic breasts.
