Hot Flashes and Hormones; What Causes Hot Flashes?

One of the most recognizable symptoms of menopause are hot flashes. Much like every other menopausal symptom they are caused by a hormone imbalance in the body. Additionally, environmental, medicinal and nutritional aspects may also contribute to their frequency and strength.

The specific cause of hot flashes is often low estrogen and how that affects the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is the part of the brain that controls sleep, appetite, sex hormones, and body temperature. Diminished natural estrogen levels trick the hypothalamus into believing that the body is too hot. It then causes the hot flash as an attempt to rid the body of this nonexistent excess heat.

Is it known if red wine triggers hot flashes? The other night at dinner, I had a glass and wow, someone turned up the furnace? Just curious and don’t see much out there on this topic. I’ve also found this article Help for hot flashes and night sweats — causes and natural solutions from Women to Women.

      Hi Jacqueline,

Unfortunately the exact causes of hot flashes is not known. It is known that there are chemicals in wine, chocolate, aged cheeses and some other foods that may cause hot flashes to be triggered. So it is a good idea to avoid your trigger foods to help you avoid hot flashes. There are theories that hot flashes come from changes in the autonomic nervous system which is controlled by the brain which reacts to changes in hormone levels, but this is still in the theory stages. There are also changes in catecholamine levels that can be triggered by stress which is why some women notice more hot flashes in stressful situations.

      Good luck!
