My question is, how old do you have to be to start bio-identical hormone therapy? I’m only 28, but I almost feel like I’m going through Menopause after reading about all of the symptoms. I still have my period regularly but I have crazy mood swings from anxiety and anger to panic and sadness. Sometimes I feel completely fine and others I feel like a monster. I think it might be severe PMS but I’m not sure. I’ve talked to my doctor about it, but she just suggests I keep trying a different kind of birth control until I find “one that works” and suggests anti-depressants for my mood. I don’t want to be on anti-depressants at 28! I know PMS is all hormonal, so I was wondering if bio-identical hormone therapy can help me…HELP!

Angela,
Hormonal imbalance does not discriminate by age or gender – we help many patients in their 20′s who suffer from severe PMS or PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) and other hormonal imbalances. Hormonal imbalances are more common as we age because hormones naturally decline but since diet, exercise, stress and lifestyles can all affect hormones, it is not uncommon for men and women to experience problems in their 20′s or 30′s. If hormones are causing your problems, natural bioidentical hormone therapy can help.
A good way to figure out if you are suffering from severe PMS or PMDD is to keep a journal of your symptoms and your moods throughout your cycle. Start on day one of your cycle, the day your period begins, and record your experience throughout the entire month. After a couple of months, you should notice a pattern in your symptoms and should find that you have the most problems in the second two weeks of your cycle. If so, your problem is likely severe PMS and chances are that the different birth control options (which contain hormones that could be worsening your condition) and anti-depressants are not the answer.
The only way to know for sure is to have a hormone evaluation performed by an expert hormone doctor like those at BodyLogicMD. The results will provide a quick and accurate assessment of your hormonal problems, allowing you and your bioidentical hormone therapy doctor to map out a plan which may include bioidentical hormones, stress management techniques, improved nutrition, pharmaceutical grade supplements and a fitness routine. This plan will help you treat and relieve the symptoms at their cause.
Thank you for the great question Angela and we hope you find relief soon!

Dear Angela,
I am also only 28 and feel that I also am suffering the same symptoms. Good Luck to you and I hope you find a wonderful doctor to help.
Hello girls, I’m 28 as well, and I’ve been having problems as well. So frustrating because I have been to many doctors and no one seems to care. If you know of anything I can do please let me know. Thanks!

Thanks Ladies! I feel like I am losing it right now. I am only 27 and have been having hormonal problems for eight months. I decided to get off of birth control because I couldn’t find one that made me feel really good and was starting to have panic attacks. I didn’t have any reason to be upset so I assumed it was my pills. After being off the pills I started having severe sleeping problems, mood swings, irregular periods, cramping, and I miss my old easy going, relaxed self. The sleeping problems have been the worst (missing 3-5 days of sleep a week). My doctors don’t seem to care, and they want me to just take anti-depressants….I have never been a depressed person until now! I asked them to test my hormones and they said it was not necessary and was not the issue. What should I do? I cry all the time because I know these feelings are not normal and that sleeping 30 minutes a night is not normal! If anyone has any suggestions or has felt this way please let me know. I feel that I am too young to be dealing with this but here I am searching for answers!
Hi Lee,
The symptoms you are describing sound like Perimenopause also referred to as pre-menopause or early menopause. It is the length of time before and one year after the final menstrual period, during which ovarian hormonal patterns change. The average age at which irregular cycles develop is approximately age 47 but in many cases can start as early as 35 years old. Like menopause, perimenopause is a normal part of a woman’s life cycle. Generally, the ages at which your mother and older sisters began menopause and perimenopause are a good indication of when you might expect to start experiencing the symptoms of being premenopausal. If you smoke, it is likely that you will start perimenopause a year or two earlier than you would have if you didn’t smoke.
You can read more about perimenopause and some of the solutions for your symptoms.
I hope you find the answers you are looking for!
