The Fish Oil Fiasco

March 11, 2010

Millions of Americans turn to a variety of fish oil supplements to get their daily dose of omega-3 fatty-acids; however, several companies that help to fuel this billion dollar industry, are facing serious legal trouble, after it was discovered that they were manufacturing supplements that were tainted by a cancer-causing chemical compound known as polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB).

According to ABC News, although the compound was officially banned in 1979, residual PCB’s still lurk within the atmosphere and may have contaminated some marine life. PCB’s have been linked to poor cognitive development in children, open dermal (skin) sores and ocular (eye) lesions, irregular menstrual cycles, lowered immune response, endocrine disruption and many forms of cancer.

The lawsuit pertains to a variety of manufacturers and retail distributors, including CVS Pharmacy, General Nutrition (GNC), Now Health Group, Omega Protein, Pharmavite, Rite Aid, Solgar and Twin Lab.

BUYER BEWARE:

You’re taking a risk when you buy fish oil supplements from a health food store or pharmacy. Instead, consider buying a proven brand recommended by your physician to ensure safety and efficacy.
