Premature Menopause on the Rise

February 24, 2010

According to fertility expert Dr. Kamaraj of Akash fertility Centre, there has been a sharp rise in cases of premature menopause in recent years. Historically speaking, the onset of menopause in women would oftentimes take place between the ages of 40 and 45; however, recent studies indicate that women are more likely to begin experiencing menopause symptoms as young as 34. It’s estimated that one million American women are impacted by premature ovarian failure, and the numbers continuing to climb.

Dr. Kamaraj attributes this stark trend to a combination of factors including hormonal imbalance, chronic stress, poor eating habits, lack of exercise and insufficient sleep/rest. In addition, many of these factors have also been linked to the onset of premature ovarian failure (POF) and also a condition known as amenorrhea – defined by the Mayo Clinic as the “absence of menstruation – one or more missed periods” in a woman of reproductive age. Dr. Kamaraj also warns that many of the conditions that attribute to POF such as amenorrhea, hypergonadotropinism (high testosterone) and hypoestogenism (low estrogen).

POF significantly increases a woman’s risk of developing a wide variety of disease and conditions such as osteoporosis, adrenal fatigue, thyroid disorders, diabetes and heart disease. Many of the symptoms associated with POF are similar to those experienced during menopause and are as follows:

  • Amenorrhea
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Insomnia/sleeplessness
  • Irritability
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Waning energy
  • Low libido
  • Painful sex
  • Bladder problems
  • Infertility

Despite their symptomatic congruencies, the distinguishing factor between POF and menopause relies on a woman’s estrogen and FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) levels – it’s normal for menopausal women to experience waning estrogen and TSH levels; however, for women still in their reproductive years, it’s not.
